Surviving Raine

Surviving Raine - Shay Savage *******This review contains spoilers*******

Ok. So I’m not really sure where to start. I wanted to like this book. I tried to like this book. I kept praying that by some miracle this book would get better for me. It just didn't happen.

Gist of the story: Daniel(Bastian) and Raine get marooned on a deserted island. He teaches her how to survive eating raw fish and pelicans, she teaches him how to love and trust. Simple basic love story.

The problem for me was Daniel/Bastian (short for Sebastian). I hated him. He was a drunk. He was rude & crude, a man-whore and just a general all around ass-hole. All redeemable qualities, IMO. Lot’s of my favorite H’s have had at least one (usually more) of these flaws but have overcome them in my eyes.

This is the thing I just can't get over…..…..

He, in the past, participated in fight-to-the-death type games for money (apparently lots and lots of money). Ok, I have a serious problem with this.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around my H willingly participating in a game of hunt and be hunted and then brutally kill them before they kill you. I can forgive a lot in my H’s but to my knowledge they have never killed anyone simply because it was a game. When my men kill someone it’s because they are bad-assed special Ops guys who are saving the life of the woman they love! And, dammit, the fun comes out of it being JUSTIFIED!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s like the author wanted you to feel sorry for him by giving him this really shitty life so that you, in return, could use to excuse his career choice.

I swear this author did everything to him but drop a freaking house on his head. God, it was depressing.

In case you're wondering I'll just name a few:

His parents abandoned him.
He may have been abused.
He got kicked out of multiple foster homes.
He watched a girl he was friends with in a group home get gang raped (and then she committed suicide).
His, supposedly, girlfriend tricked him into getting her pregnant then left him for someone else and took their baby with her.
And it just went on and on and on.

And not for ONE single minute did you get to forget about one single miserable second of his miserable life!!

Just to be fair, he did have moments where he was almost likable, but they were very few and far between.

The one thing I did agree with was when he told Raine that she deserved someone a lot better.

Book ended. I still hated him.
